    Getting More Out of Your Love Life

    Seven (7) Tips from Sue Johanson:

    1. Skip burgers and fries. Good nutrition makes you feel much better, and makes for better sex. “Eat junk food,” she says, “and all you want to do is fight over the remote control.”

    2. Games are good. Try phone sex—he on one extension, she on another. Try hide-and-seek, on the floor, in the dark, in the nude. “Find each other, then have fun under the coffee table.”

    3. Toys work, too. “Go to a sex store together, buy small, low-cost items to start, check them out, then invest more once you know what you like.”

    4. Choose a time when both feel ready for lovemaking. Wake up your partner at midnight with caresses and a sultry “Hi, big guy!” Someone with arthritis may do best in the morning, after a good night’s sleep. “When we were young,” Johanson points out, “we could never have sex during the day—the kids would hear.”

    5. If you have a physical restriction, or just the aches and pains of aging:

    • Take an anti-inflammatory 20 minutes ahead of time.
    • Together, take a romantic hot bath, with lights low, and candles and incense by the tub.
    • Keep extra pillows nearby in case of leg or foot cramps.
    • Have cream or gel handy.
    • Warm the bed with an electric blanket.

    6. Pleasurable positions? Spoon-fashion. Side-by-side. The X position. Or female-on-top. Try chair sex: It’s easy on the joints.

    7. And try the following books:

FlOaTiNg MiNd

    Para akong lumulutang habang naglalakad papunta sa abangan ng aming service coaster papasok ng opisina. Habang nasa sasakyan, pumikit lang ako pero gising ang diwa hanggang makarating sa aming pinapasukang kumpanya.

    Hindi kasi ako makatulog kagabi, dahil ng araw puro tulog ang ginawa namin. Dakong alas onse ng umaga nagising ako, hindi pa sana ako babangon ngunit ng maamoy ko ang luto ni master na sinigang na maya-maya biglang kumalam ang sikmura ko (sarap master hehe).

    Pagkatapos mananghalian balik ulit sa higaan, kung hindi pa nag-ring ang cellphone ko bandang alas-kwatro ng hapon siguro tulog pa rin ako. Suma-total ng tulog ko’y mahigit labing-limang oras… wheeew.

    Kinagabihan, pagkatapos ng hapunan lumabas kami. Si Deks punta netcafe at kami ni master bibili ng tubig inumin. Bago tumuloy sa grocery store, niyaya ko muna siyang magkape. Order ako ng cafe mocha at sa kanya naman ay cappuccino. At nang maubos, ikot-ikot naman kami bago bumili ng tubig inumin at tuluyang umuwi na sa aming tahanan.

    11pm… pabaling-baling lang ako at pagdilat tingin sa orasan. 12:30am, 1:30am, 2:30am, 3:30am 4:30am, 5:30am - wake up call.

    Ba’t kaya ako di nakatulog? Homesick? Nasobrahan sa tulog? O, kulang sa kape?

    Eto ako ngayon, antok na antok na. Di bale idlip na lang mamaya after lunch. Zzzzzzzzzzz

In 1997, Kelley Scanlon, an Epidemiologist, and her colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control received a call from Georgia health authorities with disturbing news. The parents of two infants had weaned their babies onto soy- and rice-based milk substitutes, even though both can lack crucial nutrients found in fortified cow’s milk and formula. As a result, the children were suffering from diseases that had all but disappeared in the United States: rickets (a severe deficiency of vitamin D) and kwashiorkor (protein deficiency). Without intervention, the infants could have grown up with bone or brain damage.

Soy and rice drinks continue to grow in popularity because they’re safe for adults and low in fat and cholesterol. But what some parents don’t know is that the drinks, if given to infants as primary sources of nutrition, can lead to health problems associated with kids in Third World countries. While national numbers aren’t available, doctors are reporting nutrition-deficiency cases?many linked to rice and soy milk?in otherwise healthy kids in the United States and Canada.

The problems associated with rice and soy milk are most pressing in kids younger than 2 because they don’t eat as wide a variety of food as older toddlers. (The American Academy of Pediatrics says infants younger than 6 months should get 210mg of calcium, mostly from breast milk, each day.) “We’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg,” says Scanlon of the CDC, who estimates that up to 80 percent of kids with milder cases of malnutrition may not be properly diagnosed.

Rice milk is chiefly made from brown rice and sweetener. The drink is often fortified with calcium, iron and B vitamins, but it’s usually low in protein. Without enough protein, says Albert Yan, a pediatric dermatologist at the University of Pennsylvania, babies’ skin becomes like “flaky paint” and their hair, lacking enough melanin, gets lighter. More seriously, they develop tissue swelling (edema) and their bodies fail to produce crucial immune factors.

Soy milk, by comparison, contains about the same amount of protein as cow’s milk, but not all brands are fortified with vitamin D. Unfortified brands have been implicated in cases of rickets, which drastically slows bone growth. Parents who feed infants a soy product should either pick a heavily fortified brand or give a vitamin D supplement along with it, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Breast-feeding moms are sometimes advised to use supplements; too, since breast milk doesn’t contain much D. And vegan moms’ milk can be low in another vitamin, B12.

The good news is the nutritional problems are often reversible. Those feeding rice- or soy-based beverages to children younger than 5 should see their pediatrician if their kids exhibit bowleggedness and delayed crawling and walking (symptoms of rickets) or distended bellies, lethargy and growth failure (kwashiorkor). Talk to your pediatrician and check your child’s diet against the AAP recommendations ). After all, it’s your job to do their body good.

ThRoBbInG dAy

    First game ng klasmeyts ng nakaraang huwebes, dahil sa nagkasabay ang schedule ng laro sa Port at Da?awah, walo lang kaming nakalaro plus coach master. Ang lima naming kasamahan ay piniling maglaro sa port dahil knock-out game at kulang din sila.

    Kalagitnaan ng 1st quarter bumalik ang sakit ng nasprained kong left ankle kaya hindi na ko nakapaglaro ng tuluyan. Lumaban ang mga kakampi ko kahit kulang, ngunit bandang huli hingal kabayo na kaya natalo rin.

    Bukas me laro ulit kami ngunit ipapahinga ko muna ng dalawang linggo ang ankle ko para makapaglaro pa sa huling laban sa May 23 para sa pagtatapos ng elimination round.

    Parang naulit lang ang nangyari ng nakalipas na dalawang linggo, paika-ika na namang naglalakad habang nag-iikot sa opisina. Sana ay gumaling na ng maayos ang paa ko para tuwid na lakad ko.

    Isang umaga habang ako’y nakatambay sa harapan ng aming bahay sa probinsiya, nakita ko ang dalawa kong kapitbahay na mukhang may lakad. Tinawag nila ako at sinabing sumama daw ako sa kanila papunta sa tabing dagat. Mas matanda sa akin ng isa at dalawang taon ang mga kaibigan kong ito. Dumaan muna kami ng tindahan at bumili ng dalawang kaha ng sigarilyong Hope. Habang kami ay naglalakad, naabutan namin ang isang kakilala namin na papunta rin ng dagat at sumabay na siya sa amin habang naglalakad. Mga apat na taon naman ang agwat sa akin nito.

    Nang nasa tabing dagat na kami, patuloy pa rin ang paglalakad namin. Ako’y nagtaka at tinanong ko kung saan talaga ang punta, ang sagot nila “Magpapatuli kami kay Mang Henry, basta samahan mo lang kami”. Si Mang Henry ang sikat na manunuli sa isang sitio sa amin. Ayun na nga, malapit-lapit na kami sa bahay ni Mang Henry, nakita namin na hinahasa niya ang kanyang labaha.

    “Andito na pala kayo”, bungad aniya. “Pitas muna kayo ng bubot na dahon ng bayabas at inyong nguyain”, dagdag pa niya. Sumunod naman ang tatlo habang ako’y nakaupo sa isang bato.
    Tinawag na kung sino ang mauuna, “Si Kadyawer na lang ho kasi siya pinakamatanda sa amin”, sabay sagot ng dalawa kung kasama. Puwesto na ang tinawag at inayos na kung saan ang tatapyasin. Ipwinesto ang labaha at ilang bagsak ng pamukpok na kahoy napunit din ang balat. “Medyo makunat ka na ah. Hala iluwa mo na ang dahon ng bayabas at itapal mo sa sugat ni Dayunyor mo”. “Hanap ka ng damo, tapos hilahin mo’, utos pa ni niya.
    Ganun din ang ginawa niya sa dalawa kung kasama.

    Nang tapos na silang lahat, tinanong ni Mang Henry sa kanila kung ba’t ako raw hindi nagpatuli. Sagot ng isa kong kaibigan, ” Sa doktor daw yan magpapatuli”. Tuwing summer vacation, may Medical Mission na nagaganap sa aming bayan. Mga doktor na galing pa sa iba’t-ibang hospital sa Kamynilaan.

    Balik tayo sa tabing-dagat. “Pareho lang naman ‘yun eh, ilang taon ka na ba?”, tanong ni Mang Henry. “Labing-isang taon na po”, sagot ko naman. Sabi nya pwede na raw, tapos sulsol pa tatlo kong kasamahan. Ayun napapayag ako. Sa isip-isip ko, patay si dayunyor at lalo na sa bahay pero bahala na nga.

    Ginaya ko ang pinagawa sa mga kasamahan ko at eto na. “O sa taas ka lang tumingin huh, huwag mong pagmasdan”, ang utos niya. Dalawang pukpok tapos na. Tiningnan ko marami dugo,parang umikot ang paningin ko. Napansin niya na namumutla na ako, inutusan niya ang mga kasama ko na pumitas ng dahon ng kalamansi at dali-daling pinaamoy sa akin. Mga limang minuto rin siguro bago ako mahimasmasan.

    Nang maayos na pakiramdam ko, inutusan kami ni Mang Henry na maligo sa dagat. Inabot ng kaibigan ko ang bayad na dalawang kaha ng sigarilyo at nagpasalamat sa kanya. At kami’y umuwi na parang mga Hapones maglakad. Pagdating ng bahay sangkatutak na sermon ng Nanay ko ang sumalubong sa akin na pumasok sa kanang tainga at lumabas din sa kaliwa.

    Naibahagi ko ito sa kadahilanang tuwing bakasyon ay maraming kabataan ang nagpapatuli. Bakit nga ba natin ginagawa ito? Eh marami namang bansa ang hindi gumagawa nito.

    Sa mga kalalakihan… Sa palagay ninyo, kanino mas maganda magpatuli sa pukpok lang o doktor?

    Ito po ang madilim na karanasan ni Dayunyor. Na kahit ano pa ang mangyari sa kanya, aalagaan ko siya habang ako’y nabubuhay.

    Nagpapasalamat din ako sa kablogkadang si Kathysan kung hindi dahil sa kanya, hindi ko maisip na isulat ito. Muli maraming salamat. :)
